Titusville & Fort Myers, FL – January 30, 2025
Nikki Jones, a leading advocate for victims of illegal alien crime and President of the Voices Foundation, stood alongside Governor Ron DeSantis and law enforcement officials in Titusville and Fort Myers today to address the failures of the Florida Legislature’s latest immigration bill. The bill, which was initially presented as a tough stance against illegal immigration, has come under fire for provisions that could actually hinder state enforcement efforts.
Jones, whose husband, Shane Jones, was killed by an illegal alien, has been an outspoken critic of policies that fail to prioritize the safety of American citizens. During the press conference, she called for stronger measures that empower law enforcement and prevent loopholes that allow illegal immigrants to remain in Florida.
“Families like mine have already suffered the consequences of failed immigration policies, and we will not stand by while lawmakers put more lives at risk,” said Jones. “They're not the ones coming home to their spouse or their child's ashes – we are.”
Governor DeSantis echoed her concerns, warning that the bill, if enacted as written, would undermine Florida’s ability to enforce immigration laws effectively. “The bill the Florida Legislature passed last night fails to honor our promises to voters, fails to meet the moment, and would actually weaken state immigration enforcement,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “We must have the strongest law in the nation on immigration enforcement that will guarantee state and local deportation assistance, end catch and release, eliminate magnets such as remittances, and adopt supporting policies that will protect Floridians.”
Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey and Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Executive Director Dave Kerner present at the events reinforced the need for stronger state enforcement tools. Many argued that the Legislature’s bill lacks key provisions necessary to support local law enforcement’s ability to detain and remove illegal immigrants who pose a danger to public safety.
The events in Titusville and Fort Myers served as a rallying call for conservative leaders and advocates demanding stronger action from Florida’s lawmakers. Jones, along with DeSantis and law enforcement officials, vowed to continue the fight for policies that put Floridians first.
As the legislative session continues, all eyes will be on whether Florida lawmakers will respond to the growing calls for a stronger, more effective immigration enforcement bill.
